Handpicked…

Opening soon in Leeds is Handpicked Hall.

handpickedhall

‘A new concept in shopping’ has been used to describe Yorkshire business Handpicked Hall, already running successfully in Ripon and Skipton. Taking over unused buildings on the high street, Handpicked Hall brings together small businesses selling specialist produce including crafts, vintage clothes and food to the local community.

A third Handpicked Hall is opening in Leeds Grand Arcade on Friday 14th June (preview events on Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th), in what used to be ‘Heaven and Hell’ nightclub – AMAZING building with gorgeous windows and a glass roof! Following an application and informal interview, Love Me Sew and our craft packs were ‘handpicked’ and we were offered a place to trade in this new store!

grandarcade

We’re really excited to be given this opportunity and to allow our customers the chance to see our products ‘for real’ as opposed to just online which is perfect especially for the fabric which is always nice to see the prints and colours and feel the quality.

SONY DSC

We are confirmed to be trading on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June (opening weekend!), and Friday 21st June. Following this, we will schedule a regular time and day you can find us – which will be listed on our events page on our website.

Please pop along to the Grand Arcade and see us (and all the other handpicked traders).

New craft product launch…hello Ipad Case.

By popular demand, we’d like to introduce to you another craft pack we’ve just added to our collection…the Ipad Case.

_MG_9757

Ahh the Ipad…whether it’s providing access to emails over our breakfast brew (a naughty habit but we all do it right?), being our navigator or personal shopper, helping us to keep in touch with friends, or entertaining the kids while we make tea, these compact contraptions of cleverness are fast replacing the dog and it’s long-standing job title of ‘man’s best friend’, in our increasingly busy lives.
SONY DSC

As with all of our craft packs, we aim to provide items that are pretty as well as functional; and the lovely new Ipad Case packs do not fail to deliver, protecting your right-hand man from those nasty scratches, knocks or broken screens.

And, best of all it’s hand-made!

SONY DSCSONY DSCExample of the finished product!

The Ipad Case packs cost £14 and are available in six different styles (all pretty colours and patterns!) for you to choose from, and contains: fabric, wadding, interfacing, thread, and a button, plus a template and easy-to-follow instructions, that have been beautifully designed with pictures and diagrams.

How to make a Pretty Peg Bag

So it’s May and we finally have sunshine…hurraah! One of my favourite things about the arrival of nice weather is being able to hang my washing outside. Yes, agreed…I do need to get out more!

My tutorial today is to celebrate the glorious-ness that is hanging your washing on the line with this very cute peg bag.

SONY DSC
For a simpler version, just make it with fabric too beautiful to cover up with the decoration details! Or, for the more confident sew-er, use subtler fabric and appliqué a little washing line like mine!

You need:

SONY DSC

Option extras (for washing line decoration)

  • Bondaweb
  • Scraps of co-ordinating fabric
  • Embroidery thread (here I’ve used black and brown)

Step 1. Cut the fabric.

    • Cut two rectangles of outer fabric 35cm x 25cm.

SONY DSC

  • From one of the rectangles, cut a piece 10cm wide, so you are left with two pieces: one 10cm x 25cm and another 25cm x 25cm.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • Cut the lining fabric: cut one rectangle 25cm x 35cm (same as the outer fabric), another 25cm x 27cm and, a small rectangle 25cm x 12cm.
  • Cut two piece of lining fabric: 20cm x 5cm for the button loops.

SONY DSC

Step 2. Make the button loops.

  • Press the button loop fabric in half length-ways, right-side (patterned-sides) out.

SONY DSC

  • Open, and fold the sides towards the centre fold, press.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • Re-fold along the centre fold, pin and sew along the open side, a few mm from the edge. Repeat for both button loops, and leave aside until later.

SONY DSC

If you are not decorating the front of your bag with the little washing line, please skip to Step 4: Making up the bag.

Step 3. Decorating the front of the bag.

  • Using a pencil, lightly draw the line for where you want to hand-sew the washing line on the front piece of outer fabric (the one that measures 25cm x 25cm).

SONY DSC

  • Using the black embroidery thread, hand sew a running stitch along your pencil line.

SONY DSC

  • Draw shapes of little clothes on the paper side of the Bondaweb – I’ve done some little trousers, a t-shirt, a long-sleeve top, a towel, and some pants!

SONY DSC

  • Cut out around the shapes and place on the reverse of your fabric scraps. Press for a few seconds until the glue of the Bondaweb fuses and then cut out the shapes.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

  • When they have cooled, peel off the paper backing of the Bondaweb, leaving the glue layer attached to the fabric.
  • Place your clothes pieces along the embroidered washing line. Press so they stick to the bag fabric.

SONY DSC

  • Set your sewing machine to a small straight stitch. Carefully, close to the edge, sew around the clothes using your choice or contrasting or matching thread.

SONY DSC

  • Finally, add the finishing touches to your decoration by hand-sewing the pegs (it wouldn’t be a peg bag without the pegs!) – I  back-stitched a couple of stitches per peg using a brown embroidery thread.

SONY DSC

Step 4. Putting the bag together.

  • Place the front bag pieces (outer and lining), those measuring 25cm x 25cm and 25cm x 27cm respectively (the outer piece you have just decorated if applicable), together, right-sides, facing.

SONY DSC

  • Pin and, using a 1cm seam allowance, sew across the top. Press the seams open.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • Fold the lining back over the outer (reverse-sides facing), and line up across the bottom. Press. Because the lining piece was 2cm longer, you will have a edging of lining fabric showing across the top of the front outer piece (see picture below to make this step clearer).

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

  • Find your button loops you made earlier, fold and pin to the right-side of the bag back outer fabric (measuring 25cm x 35cm), at equal distance across the top. The loop should be facing in with the open ends poking out of the top – sew in place.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • Get your small rectangle of outer fabric (measuring 25cm x 10cm) and place, right-sides together, on top of the back outer fabric and button loops. Pin across the top.

SONY DSC

  • Repeat the above for the lining fabric (minus the button loops) and sew, using a 1cm seam allowance, across the top. Press open the seams.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • Place these two pieces, right-sides, together. Pin across the top (the top of the small rectangle) and sew using a 1cm seam allowance. Press open the seams.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

  • As with the front bag piece, fold the lining of this piece back over the outer, reverse-sides together. Line up across the bottom and press. Again, as the lining (of the small rectangle piece) was 2cm longer, this should create a nice band of contrasting lining across the top of the outer piece.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

  • Fold the small rectangle over so right sides are together. Pin along the sides.

SONY DSC

  • Place the front bag piece, right sides together on the other half of the bag back, with a slight over-lap of the small rectangle. Pin around the edge.

SONY DSC SONY DSC

SONY DSC

  • Using a 1cm seam allowance, sew down the sides and across the bottom of the bag.

SONY DSC

  • Turn right way out through the opening. Press.

Step 5. Attach the buttons.

  • Fold the button loops over to the top of the bag to work out where you need to put the buttons. Make a small chalk mark to help position the buttons.

SONY DSC

  • Sew on the buttons.

SONY DSC

Fill with pegs and proudly hang on your washing line!

Listed in the best sewing blogs!

Yep that’s right!

We were very pleased a couple of weeks ago to receive an email from the Editor of My Daily, an online lifestyle news website featuring the latest in fashion, style, design, hair & beauty.

We were asked if we could be mentioned in their soon-to-be published article about some of the best sewing blogs! Woweee…us, little us, who have only been up and running a short time (and part-time at that with all the other commitments…babies, puppies, house moves, day jobs etc.) – this was certainly an achievement for our humble crafty business. Big pats on the back all around!

I sent over a couple of pics and a bit of a write up about why I thought sewing was popular and why I love sewing (and yes…they did have to cut this section down!) and, a week later, the post was published!
Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 13.38.37We are really please that they featured us, and my comments, in the main body of the post as well as the blog listings (and I was very excited to get my name mentioned in the same sentence as Savile Row‘s and of The Great British Sewing Bee’s fame Patrick Grant!).

And we were even more flattered to be rated one of the best sewing blogs and featured alongside other amazing talented ladies and their gorgeous blogs: Tilly and The Buttons (also off of The Sewing Bee!), Murmur, Lucky Lucille, Madalynne, Did You Make That?, and Seamless.

This is a real confidence boost for us and leaves us happy in the knowledge we are doing something right!

Love Me Sew at the World’s Largest Show (and Tell) festival.

Tomorrow, Sam and I are packing up our sewing machines (times six!) and heading for the North East! This weekend, we are taking part in the Maker Faire…apparently ‘the World’s Largest Show (and Tell) festival’ taking place at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.

Maker-Faire

Something a little bit different from the normal craft event as, not only will we be amongst some of our own crafty kind, there will also be makers and exhibitors ranging from tech enthusiasts to educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors, and commercial exhibitors…wholeheartedly embracing the word ‘Make’!

lifecentre(Photo taken from the Maker Faire UK website)

The Maker Faire is defined as…

‘a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.’

Which is exactly what us Love Me Sew ladies will be doing! Visitors to the fair (children and adults alike) can come along and take part in our drop in bunting workshop, enjoy the making experience through the medium of a sewing machine and their own hand (as opposed to modern dance!) and take home their creation to hang in their bedroom, kitchen, garden, school…where ever, to proudly show off and shout aloud for all to hear: ‘I made this!

bunting7As well as the workshop, for those lucky Maker Faire visitors, in the spirit of sharing the love of making, we shall be giving everyone who purchases one of our ‘Make Your Own’ craft packs a discount voucher to buy another pack for half price…you lucky things you!

_MG_9709

Find out about the other crafters at the Maker Faire at their website: www.makerfaireuk.com. I am most definitely going to disappear for half an hour to try my hand at Dabble Dabble – Make Do Printmaking…sounds brilliant!

Give Away time!

To celebrate the launch of our new Coin Purse packs, we want to give one away!

_MG_9749

If you would like to be in with a chance of winning, please tell us which is your favourite Coin Purse pack and what you would do with it if you won…e.g. Emily: If I won one of these super dooper lovely packs, I would most definitely make it for myself as I must have a hole in my existing purse as there never seems to be any coins in it!’

Coin Purse pack comes with a choice of fabric (some for the outer and some for the lining), a piece of ric rac, wadding and interfacing, and a cute button, plus the usual instructions and templates (for your to use over and over!)

Please submit your answers via our Give Away page on our website by Friday 26th April so we can choose a lucky crafter to send their favourite Coin Purse pack to (for free!)

For all you DIY brides out there…

Yesterday we attended the very lovely ‘Wedding Event with a Difference‘ hosted by Save the Date, in Nottingham. As well as a range of gorgeous stalls promoting there wares including vintage ice cream trikes, beautiful gowns, delicious cakes, the attendees were also treated to live music and a catwalk show.

SONY DSC

With the general theme of weddings moving to towards the ‘unique’ these days, more and more people seem to be wanting to add their own touches to their wedding day; and we were invited to run a DIY workshop for those craft brides (and grooms!) and their friends and families.

SONY DSC

What a great day we had! We were given a very beautiful room to work in and all the people who signed up to our workshop were so lovely and made the most gorgeous fabric flowers; many of whom said they were definitely going to make more for their weddings! Plus, we very much enjoyed chatting and hearing about their wedding plans!
SONY DSC

SONY DSC

This day was a great start to our first DIY Wedding Workshops! We have another three planned in May and June; at the lovely The Flax and Twine in York. At these workshops, we will be showing any Yorkshire (or further afield!) brides how to make ‘Mr and Mrs’ bunting, bride and bridesmaid bags, and wedding garlands and pom poms!

SONY DSC

And, judging by the popularity of yesterday’s sessions and the lovely comments and feedback we received, I don’t think these will be the last of our DIY Wedding workshops either!

If you would like to book on the DIY Wedding Workshops in York, please visit The Flax and Twine website.

New to the collection…’Make your own’ Coin Purse!

We are please to introduce another cute item to our craft pack range; the ‘Make your own’ Coin Purse.

The Coin Purse packs comes in four different styles (all pretty colours and patterns!) for you to choose from, and contains: fabric, wadding, interfacing, thread, ric rac, pearl cotton and a little button.

SONY DSC

As well as the materials, like all our other packs, you get a template and easy-to-follow instructions, that have been beautifully designed with pictures and diagrams.

We’ve given this pack a difficulty rating of 2 out of 4 as we think it’s fairly straight forward with perhaps a couple of little fiddly bits, that may take a little patience and practice…but this just means you can use our template and instructions over and over and make lots of coin purses!

_MG_9749

Please browse the Coin Purse packs, or our full range of packs on our website. We hope you like them. (And don’t forget to share your pics of your finished coin purses on our Facebook page if you decided to give one a go!)
